Our Leaders

James E. Nelson is a proud Memphian. He is a graduate of Carver High School, American Baptist College, and he received his Master of Arts Degree from Memphis Theological Seminary. Reverend Nelson’s thesis centered on “How to Disciple Black Millennials.”
 
James retired from the City of Memphis in 2015. He served as the Mayors Assistant and as the Director of Youth Services in the Administration of Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. He serves now as the District Family Engagement Specialist for Shelby County Schools.​

ABOUT THE VIEW


​The VIEW: is a non-traditional, unorthodox, out of the box, contemporary, wholistic ministry. We are focused on making the Gospel of Jesus Christ relevant (by any means) to a twenty-first century faith community in the Riverview Community of Memphis, Tennessee.
 
Vision:
To lift up Jesus for all to see.
 
Mission:
The VIEW will answer the call of Matthew 28:19 and go and develop a community of spiritually focused and faithful followers of God through the teaching of the Gospel and baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
 
Values:
The VIEW has been called to plant a new faith community in the Riverview Community, to provide a VISION for those who want to see.
 
V-ision:          
We want to assist members of the community of faith with a view of their God given purpose.
 
I-nspiration:  
We want to inspire the community of faith to pursue God’s purpose for their lives.
 
S-ervice:        
We want to serve both the spiritual and physical needs of the community of faith.
 
I-nclusion:     
We want to bring together all members of the community of faith, regardless of gender, race, generation, age, and history.
 
O-rganization:
We want to provide the community of faith with structure, a strong foundation and training to keep them focused and connected to their goals and purpose.
 
N-urturing:      
​We want to personally develop and train members of the community of faith to be spiritual and skillful leaders for Gods Kingdom.

James retired from the City of Memphis in 2015. He served as the Mayors Assistant and as the Director of Youth Services in the Administration of Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. He serves now as the District Family Engagement Specialist for Shelby County Schools.​

​​James has served in leadership in several ministries. He recently served Greater White Stone Missionary Baptist Church. He served as an associate minister, advisor to the young adults, and the Director of Christian Education.  He also, served as the Executive Director of the Stone Community Development Corporation, the non-profit arm of Greater White Stone Missionary Baptist Church.
James also serves in the ministries of Brown Missionary Baptist Church, where he is working with the leadership on a Community Development Corporation.
 
James is married to the lovely Mrs. Osha (Merl) Nelson. She is also a graduate of Carver High School. They are the proud parents of five beautiful daughters, one son, one son in love, and two incredible grandsons.
